Language Curriculum

The Bas-BASIC language curriculum accommodates students at all levels Bas-BASIC of English proficiency, from beginning through high advanced, and emphasizes all four language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students take a placement exam upon acceptance to the program, and after oral interviews on-site at the beginning of the term, are placed in the appropriate classes. Bas-BASIC recognizes that students come to the program with diverse language backgrounds, and when necessary classes can be varied to accommodate the specific needs of different students. All instruction at all levels Bas-BASIC is done in English.


Segment Language Classes

• Beginning I
Designed for students with no English language background, this course teaches basic sentence structures and question/answer forms, as well as the practical vocabulary necessary for dealing with everyday life situations. Along with extensive in-class speaking practice, audio and video tapes are used frequently to help improve pronunciation and listening comprehension.

• Beginning II
This course is designed for students who have already acquired a solid foundation in the basic grammatical patterns and structures of the language, but may have trouble applying them in real-life situations. Beginning with a review of the basic material previously studied, the practice drills and exercises are aimed at enabling students to apply what they know. The introduction of new expressions and patterns, along with the practice of shortened and colloquial forms, is an important part of the curriculum.

• Intermediate I
Designed for students who have acquired a solid foundation in basic structures and vocabulary as well as the ability to use them proficiently, this course teaches advanced expressions and helps students learn to use the appropriate language style and register in various situations. Students read longer, more complicated passages, and use complex patterns to describe their opinions in speech and writing.

• Intermediate II
Students learn a wide range of vocabulary, gain a more in-depth understanding of the logical structures of sentences, and acquire the ability to read rapidly. Discussions become more academic, covering topics pertaining to societal problems and global issues. Through exercises such as in-class debates, students use advanced vocabulary and practice expressing and summarizing their thoughts and opinions.

• Advanced
This course is designed for students who already have a sufficient working knowledge of English but would like to attain a higher level of English in order to pursue research or business in English speaking Countries. Materials used include excerpts from literary works, academic writing, current periodicalsand business writing. Students are asked to summarize content, discuss the topics they read about and exchange opinions, and write extensive compositions.
